When God Wakes You Up!

My son is a very hard worker and a notoriously heavy sleeper. I remember trying to wake him for school. Phillip had a way of acting like he was fully conscious while he was still sleeping, so I would leave the room without completely waking him. It was frustrating then. It’s funny now. But, that’s because it’s not my problem anymore.

No, it’s his darling wife’s dilemma, she who is great with child number three. Bless her heart. Carey is hoping she goes into labor in the middle of the day. They had something of a trial run the other night when their horse got out of the pasture and it didn’t go well. Phillip was upright a while before he was actually functioning.

A part of me understands. I’m a pretty light sleeper most of the time, unless I allow myself the luxury of a Sunday afternoon nap. That’s another story entirely. I wake barely aware of who I am or what day it is.

Did you know the Bible often compares the sin of unbelief to a heavy sleep? The unbeliever is dead to the things of God and indifferent or asleep to all that is holy. When we come to faith in Jesus, He brings us to life as we were meant to live it. It’s as if He says, “Wake up, friend. I have something to show you!” And so it begins.

We’re up, but our senses are dull.  Our eyes are open, but for the most part we’re clueless.

Eyes that have been sleeping must be trained to focus. Dull ears must learn how to listen. Thankfully, we aren’t left to wander around on our own after our long unconscious nap. Progress comes when we keep our eyes on the One who opened them. Jesus trains and transforms those who will continue to behold Him and He does it from the inside out. It’s that simple and that challenging.

It sounds like the Psalmist was making just this sort of commitment when he said, “As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; I will be satisfied with Your likeness when I awake.”
