Knock, Knock, Who’s There? Dixie Belle!

Hello folks, welcome back to my front porch. I miss you when you’re gone! Have a seat, and let’s chat…~smile~

I’ve got a real “bless their hearts” story for y’all. Did you hear about the Pennsylvania couple who were minding their own business when they were attacked by a black bear— in their own home?! Indoors, as in, “I’ll take: How exactly does one remain motionless when there’s a bear on the sofa, for three hundred, Alex?”

According to the news, their dog was being chased by a black bear when he, the dog, ran into the house to escape. It didn’t say whether Lucky left the doggie door open or the bear came thru the wall, but it doesn’t much matter, now does it? The good news is, the couple were both treated at the hospital and are expected to be okay. I wouldn’t blame the dog, however, if he were a mite nervous about their release.

Just reading that article remindS me of the time Dixie Belle surprised our poor neighbors back on Island Point. They had just gotten their grandfather, family patriarch, home from the hospital and situated in the recliner with cushions and pillows. All of his loved ones were there to visit, and to witness Dixie’s escapade. This is back when she was an inside puppy, forever chomping at the bits to be an outside puppy.

That day, someone opened our front dog and Dixie escaped. She thought my chasing her was big fun. It only made her crazier, and more elusive. Imagine my horror when I saw her aiming for the neighbor’s just as one of the kids opened the door. Quick as lightening, Dixie, with me on her heels hollering, ran into their living room and up Grandpa’s chair, where she gave him some “Glad you’re home” sugar full on the lips before continuing over the back of the recliner and down the hall. Can you say mortified? I felt like an unannounced black bear showing up for Jeopardy.

Fortunately for me, they were most southern about our intrusion, even inviting me to stay for coffee. Fortunately for Dixie, she lived to tell the tale. All’s well that ends well, or close to it.

Hugs,
Shellie

P.S. This Thursday evening, Oct. 20th, from five to seven, I’ll be signing “Sue Ellen’s Girl Ain’t Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy” at Paul Michael’s in Lake Village, AR. If you’re in the area, do come out and visit!
