Computer Geeks Needed

Paulette wanted me to tell y’all to be careful what you wish for— you just might get it. Yep, there’s a story there. Paulette’s been begging her mama to get a computer. Mrs. Floreece can’t get around in her garden the way she used to, and with Mr. Harold being gone now, and her other kids living out of state, well, she’s had a hard time figuring out what to do with her time. Paulette thought getting a computer would be a good idea. It’d give Mrs. Floreece something to do, and she could use it to email her kids and grandkids.

It took some convincing on Paulette’s part, Mrs. Floreece had her heels dug in at first, but she finally gave in about a month ago. The problem is that Paulette had an unexpected payoff. She’s now spending all of her time at her Mama’s tutoring her on the computer. Paulette was over there all Sunday afternoon and this morning her phone rang bright and early. It was her mama and she started fussing as soon as Paulette picked up.

“I won’t ever be able to use this thing,” Mrs. Floreece whined. “I forget everything you tell me after you leave. I’m trying to get my pictures off my digital camera like you showed me a thousand times now, but I forgot how.”

Paulette sighed. “Mama, are you looking at the notes I left you?”
“I sure am; I just can’t do it.”

“Aw, come on,” Paulette said. “Aren’t you the woman who was always telling me
that can’t never could?”
“Don’t get lippy,” Mrs. Floreece said.

“I’m sorry, Mama. What does it say on the screen right now?”
It says, “Hit any key.”
“And…” Paulette said, “Did you do that?”

Mrs. Floreece snorted. “No, smarty pants, I didn’t. I can’t find the any key.”
