Bubba the Chess Boxer

Hello folks, let’s chat…~smile~ Bubba has found a new sport and true to form, the overgrown kid is all in. It’s called chess boxing, a competition that combines the brainy game of chess with the brawny sport of boxing. The sport was born across the big pond but it has since made it to America, and to Bubba. Let me be clear. This worries me.

Matches begin with opponents sitting at a chess board in the middle of a ring. They’re dressed in their boxing gear minus gloves, at least for the first four minutes of calculated chess moves. After that, somebody moves the table while the guys get their gloves laced up and it’s on chicken bone. They fight for three minutes before sitting back down and resuming the chess match. This can go on for up to eleven rounds. I don’t see Bubba’s matches lasting that long. I told him so.

“Look, Bubba, what makes you think you’ll be able to turn it on and off like that?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Bubba said, this as he danced around in front of me working on his footwork. “Be still,” I told him. “You’re making me crazy. And you know exactly what I’m talking about. Soon as that fellow makes off with one of your little pawns you’re going to deck him on the spot, especially if he’s just gotten a good lick in on you during the boxing round.”

Bubba grinned. “No, I won’t.” “You want to bet?” “Sure, how much?” “Don’t be silly,” I told him. “It was a figure of speech. You know I don’t gamble. Besides, I didn’t know you were a chess player.”

“I’m not,” Bubba admitted, “but how hard can it be? I watched it on TV.”

When I left him, Bubba was working on his strategy. He figures he can score enough blows during the boxing rounds to coast during the checkers, as he insists on referring to the chess game.

Bubba the chess boxer, this can’t end well. Mark my words, y’all, the last thing that boy needs is a blow to the head.
